In April, 2009 O'Brien's painting of New Amsterdam in 1650
was used as the cover image for the catalog for the Modern Marine Masters Exhibition at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut.

 
O'Brien's paintings have been used four times on the cover of Naval History Magazine — from 2007 to 2009. This magazine is published by the U.S. Naval Institute at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.
O'Brien's painting The Battle of the Chesapeake was featured on the cover of the catalog for the 2007 Mystic International Marine Art Exhibition, which was held in Mystic CT.

a production crew for The History Channel filmed O'Brien in his studio.
O'Brien's paintings of Civil War maritime scenes were featured in a four-page cover article in Sea History magazine, published by the National Maritime Historical Society.
