Meet the artist after the presentation on the
The Maryland Independence Yacht
which will be moored on site. This is the former official Maryland state yacht, originally built as a submarine chaser in 1944.

In his illustrated lecture, Patrick O’Brien will discuss how he brings maritime history to life on the canvas. He will discuss the thorough research that goes into his paintings — from reading old journals of sailors and admirals, to studying antique charts and sailing manuals. He will talk about his study of Baltimore clippers, and his investigations into the history of Baltimore’s harbor and the Annapolis waterfront. He will then discuss how he translates this historical information into paintings, including the step-by-step process of recreating the Battle of the Chesapeake Bay, a turning point in the Revolutionary War. O’Brien will bring some of his original paintings for closer examination. O’Brien is the author and illustrator of 12 non-fiction children’s books. Some of his books will be available for sale.
